April 5th,2024 Meeting 2

TODAY’S CLASS

Today's class was over Zoom, feel free to check out the Google Drive under “Miscellaneous” for the recording.

In today's class, we got a lot done!

First, we started talking about some of our homework that was due before the start of class – Zotero articles and R1 HW. We went over some possible challenges faced by some students in R and went through how to overcome those obstacles.

Next, we had a virtual tour of our field sites. Some of the ones we visited and discussed were:

  • Student Farm

  • UCD Quad

  • Arboretum(Oakgrove, Pollinator Garden)

  • Biological Garden

  • Putah Creek (has a good bird, plant, and insect population)

  • Bee Haven

  • Retention Pond (has a good bird population)

  • Davis Wetlands (aquatic birds)

  • Wild Horse (coyotes, burrowing owls) 

  • Russell Ranch

  • YOLO Bypass

After that, we discussed the CH1 reading 

We then collaborated on the “Observation Tips” document and explored the many files and documents in the “Project Choice” folder of our Google Drive.

Next, we reversed-engineered the articles that we submitted on Zotero and went into breakout rooms to discuss them 

Finally, we discussed how mind mapping and AI could help us come up with ideas for our project.

  2. Don’t forget to do your personal field trip before our next meeting on Wednesday, April 10th at any of the locations listed in our Field Sites Map

  3. As well as posting a question to the ABI 198 Question Warehouse

  4. Also, don’t forget to bring a Notebook and a writing tool for our next class at the Arboretum

ABI198 Section B– Granaries, Bark, and Satellites: An Ever-Evolving Quest

May 7th, 2025 Great job everyone for charging full speed into today's adventures! Looks like our Cahill group was able to find 4 new granaries (7 total) and our Quail Ridge group found 7 new ones (9 total), so the race to find our precious granaries is neck and neck! And a special shoutout to our satellite group for enduring the grueling technicalities of satellite imagery today, whether or not we struck gold. A lesson we learned today back in Briggs 122 was that there are TONS of ways to go about satellite imagery, with articles left and right outlining the obstacles we may face when attempting such a feat. But any progress is still progress and I feel confident that we will use what we learned today to develop a strong foundation for our image analysis. The Great Granary Quest Takes a Planning Day

 Our class meeting began with three people out inspecting Stebbins for granaries. While they were out, we began with a recap of what the three different groups found at Quail Ridge and Cahill. Once we shared our findings, it became clear: we didn’t have nearly enough granaries for the research we had imagined. But, with our collective minds that had read different papers we came up with some pretty good ideas to research.  “ Adopt the pace of nature: her secret is patience. ” - Ralph Waldo Emerson Here are our minutes: 11:00 am - Stebbins group leaves  12:10 pm - Met in Briggs and began with a recap from each group 12:30 pm - Put information from readings and questions into "Woodpecker information and Ideas" * Make the most out of granaries we find because we most likely wont find more than 20* 12:50 pm - Brainstorm plans 1:00 pm -  split into groups and discuss plans  Are our field methods adequate?
