Data Collecting and Progress

Today we successfully continued with group work and collected data! We began the day with a debrief of the next coming weeks in which we wrap up our data collection and begin data analysis. Here is a tentative schedule of our next coming weeks:

W5/22Data
F5/24Data
W5/29Analysis/Finish Data Collection
F5/31Analyst Writing
W06/05Turn in Papers + Clean up

Outside of class make sure to focus on writing, reading, and analysis of your data. Feel free to reach out to Marshall if you need help on any of these portions of your work!

GROUP UPDATES

Palatability Group
"Today we did the bug colony maintenance. we took two 1st nstar nymphs from each box and froze them for our trials. We then went outside and had a difficult time with the ants as they were not active. :c we will try again Friday at an earlier time when it is not as hot. Colony maintenance isn't needed from now on. All that's needed is survival data on Friday and then we will be done."

Boldness Group
"We stated trials first with a control trial, it involves letting the bugs roam around for maximum 5 minutes and we record the time it takes to start waking, time it wakes to reach the wall, time antennae leave the platform and time the body leave. These are how we will measure boldness, explorativeness and fear response to outside stimuli. The other tests involved gathering data to compare the responses between the soapberry bugs and box elder and how they respond to presence of a bird, novel objects and nothing."

Dissection Group
"Dissection group spent some time in the beginning of the class to decide on what to do with our petri dishes. PCR was an option but because of time, we decided it may be best to do something different. After we dissected and recorded data for 6 soapberry buts which completed our soapberry bug dissections. We will instead focus on counting the colonies on only the 4 fold diluted plates and look at the male and female gut colony composition. After today's round of dissections, we plated 6 soapberry guts. next time we may focus on taking photos of dissection process but we want to finish our boxelder bug dissections this Friday."

Color Group
"We spent time collecting more female soapberry bugs at the beginning of class. We were then able to repeat our time experiment from Friday with another 10 trials. Results seemed to be pointing towards pink (less intense red) being the most favored color. We then began our preference trials. We placed 3 females with different intensities of red on their abdomen in a petri dish with a single male and observed which shade was mated with the most. We collected data from 19 trials and hope to do more on Friday!"

Homework
  • Read necessary literature for your paper.
  • Write your papers.
  • Begin analyzing data if possible.
