Our First Day of Data Collection
Aaaaaand we are off to the races folks. Our Wednesday session this week marked the beginning of our research journey on how fire damage affects and influences woodpecker granary activity. Our first day was more of an expirimental day, as we were just mainly searching for trees with severe granary holes to map out. Now that we have an idea where some of the main target trees are located, next time we go out we can work more efficiently to go directly to the trees of interest.
Heres what we did
10:00 a.m. : Meet at parking lot
10:40 : Arrive at destiantion
10:50 : Begin hiking the mountain to scout for trees with granary holes
11:00 - 12:50 : Collect data and mark any trees that we find that has a lot of granary holes
12:50: Begin descent back to truck
1:00 : Took detour to try to scout Stebbins
1:10 - 1:50 : Drive back and regroup on campus
Here is an example of the type of trees we are mainly looking for:
So now that we have a general idea of what specifically we are looking for, now we move onto the process of collecting data and analyzing said data. I think it is key for us to organize any data that we have collected already and begin to think how we're going to use/analyze our data to write our papers. So for Friday's session I want to take our allotted time to sit down and discuss what our data means and how we can use it
Friday's Schedule:
11:00 a.m. : Crystal and group go back to Cahill
12:00 p.m. : Everyone else meets at the classroom
12:10 - 12:30 : Share any data that we gathered from Wednesday's session
12:40 - 1:00 : Brainstorm ideas on how we could use our data to make something worth working with
1:00 - 1:30 : Begin using data (if possible) to do some quantitative analysis
- Alternatively, if we do not have a salvageable amount of data from our first data collection session, think of ways that we can get more data efficiently.
1:30 - 1:50 : Begin to make a game plan for Wednesday's meeting
- Are we going to continue to work at different sites? If not, let's choose where we will conduct the majority of our research.
1:50 - 2:00 : Wrap up
To Do's:
- Post any articles that can relate and further our study to the Zotero
- Think of ways how to make something out of the data that we have gathered now
