Progress Report: RStudio, Data Analysis, and Manuscript Preparation

 May 30, 2025

The group demonstrated commendable progress in leveraging RStudio and ChatGPT as effective resources for data analysis. Friday's session was particularly productive, allowing for significant advancement in our data work, largely due to Adrian's guidance with RStudio's technical aspects. Marshall's facilitated discussions on various datasets further enhanced our analytical understanding. A key insight gained was the superior accuracy and consistency of Monday's dataset, especially when compared to established data on pipevine butterfly incubation periods, in contrast to Wednesday's dataset. This underscored the critical importance of data validation in our research.

Class minutes 5/30

10:00 AM

Class began with Adrian providing a concise overview of the day's agenda, including clearly defined expectations and set goals for our work.

10:15 AM-10:50 AM

Marshall delivered a presentation discussing various datasets applicable to our classwork, and further elaborated on the distinct benefits of employing linear regression, Pearson correlation, and ANOVA for data analysis.

11:00 AM- 11:40AM

To enhance our data troubleshooting capabilities, Adrian and Marshall presented strategies for incorporating ChatGPT to address recurring error messages. This was followed by an instructional demonstration by Adrian on RStudio data coding techniques, after which the class engaged in hands-on RStudio practice.

11:40 AM - 11:50AM

I concluded the session by summarizing our accomplished goals, outlining expectations for weekend work, and providing an agenda for Monday's class. Additionally, arrangements for a class potluck were discussed.

Before Monday

It is expected that data analysis will be concluded and manuscript writing will be underway. In preparation for our next meeting, please identify any outstanding questions for discussion with the class, and specifically for the microbe team.

Plans for Monday's Meeting:

For our upcoming session, please be prepared to discuss any questions that arose over the weekend. We will also dedicate time to ensure the laboratory is left in an orderly condition. Furthermore, it is crucial that we all confirm an understanding of the structure and expectations for individual manuscripts. Finally, look forward to concluding with our class potluck, acknowledging this significant and somewhat bittersweet milestone as we near the project's end.
