The End of a Cahill Era ... to be continued Quail Ridge


We had a successful day of data collection! The Cahill group finished collecting data using the new protocol from all granaries and went to get tacos to celebrate! The Quail Ridge group continued data collection using the new protocol and completed four granaries. Satellite group worked on collecting tree measurements with coordinate clusters. We are officially on track for data analysis this week and will begin next class. 


Here are our minutes: 

9:00am - Quail Ridge group departed  

9:45am - Quail Ridge group arrived at site and began data collection of granaries 

10:00am - Cahill group departed/satellite group began tree measurements

10:50am - Cahill group arrived at site and split off in pairs for data collection of granaries 

  • Goal: finish data collection of all Cahill granaries

  • Goal: collect as much data as possible from Quail Ridge granaries

Both groups utilized new protocol designed during the previous class 


12:00pm - Cahill group regrouped at the van 


12:20pm - Cahill group got tacos!

  • End of data collection celebration! 

1:15pm - Groups departed for campus 


1:45pm - Cahill group arrived at campus 


2:00pm - Quail Ridge group arrived at campus

Updated Protocol Reminder: 

  • Collect tree data only from height ranges 0.5m-1m and 1m-1.5m 

  • Center PVC square in each section and count total holes and occupancy within the square 

    (no more photos) 

  • Collect and label acorns, do not take measurements (done in lab)

  • Use the first hole of each section for acorn collection, hole depth, and bark thickness

  • Record occupancy/presence of acorn under “acorn status” 


Progress Report: 

We still have some granaries left for data collection at Quail Ridge, but we found that the new protocol was much more time effective and still accomplished everything we aimed to measure in our methods. The satellite group collected before/after data from 2020 and 2022 of Quail Ridge and Cahill granaries and will continue on Friday in class. Some of us will need to go back to Quail Ridge on Friday to collect more data, everyone else will begin acorn measurements and bark density measurements in the lab.

12:10: Everyone else meet in the classroom and recap data collection process (highs and lows)

12:15: Discuss acorn/bark density measurement procedures and divide into two groups

12:30: Groups split off and begin data measurements 

1:30: Discuss today’s progress, challenges, and room for improvement

1:40: Satellite group presents current data 

1:50: Discuss plan for next class from MC (Mia)

Reminders: 

Don’t forget to upload your data to the google spreadsheets! Consistent updates will fast track the data analysis process as we move along. 

Quail Ridge data collectors: keep track of the protocol and establish a plan for the day!

Everyone else: be prepared to start data analysis in the classroom and come ready to discuss ideas 

for how to collect these measurements most efficiently.

ABI198 Section B– Granaries, Bark, and Satellites: An Ever-Evolving Quest

May 7th, 2025 Great job everyone for charging full speed into today's adventures! Looks like our Cahill group was able to find 4 new granaries (7 total) and our Quail Ridge group found 7 new ones (9 total), so the race to find our precious granaries is neck and neck! And a special shoutout to our satellite group for enduring the grueling technicalities of satellite imagery today, whether or not we struck gold. A lesson we learned today back in Briggs 122 was that there are TONS of ways to go about satellite imagery, with articles left and right outlining the obstacles we may face when attempting such a feat. But any progress is still progress and I feel confident that we will use what we learned today to develop a strong foundation for our image analysis. The Great Granary Quest Takes a Planning Day

 Our class meeting began with three people out inspecting Stebbins for granaries. While they were out, we began with a recap of what the three different groups found at Quail Ridge and Cahill. Once we shared our findings, it became clear: we didn’t have nearly enough granaries for the research we had imagined.
